Help Us Connect!

Eagle Scout Candidate Sam Barrette

Your help is needed to complete an Eagle Scout project that will result in a connecting path between Sawtelle Family Hospice House and St. Athanasius Church.  The church generously allows the Hospice House to use its parking lot for overflow visitor and employee parking.  Although the properties are adjacent, those who park their car at the church must walk through the parking lot, down the sidewalk, and up our driveway to arrive at our main door.  This can be difficult for our elderly visitors and a little challenging for everyone in winter snow and ice.

North Reading High School senior and Eagle Scout candidate Sam Barrette recently won approval from the Reading Conservation Committee (no easy task) to construct a more direct path to our door.  He is building a gravel pathway and 12 foot boardwalk over a dried creek bed that lies between the two properties to create a shortcut.  Sam has been a member of the Scouts since first grade.  In addition to his scouting activities he finds time to sing A cappella, act in the school’s theatre group, and compete on its varsity swim team.  Sam started his project on October 22 and must complete it by November 17.  He has an adult professional landscaper as preceptor and a team of Scouts providing the labor.  He is in the process of raising funds for materials and hopes to gain support from St. Athanasius Church parishioners and friends of the Hospice House.

Sam’s goal is to raise $1,000.  If you would like to donate to his project, please make checks payable to Troop 750, North Reading and send to Sawtelle Family Hospice House, Attn. Sam Barrette, 320 Haverhill St., Reading, MA  01867.  For those who might be visiting at the Hospice House, you are welcome to leave your donation at the nurse’s station.
